What short-form video production actually involves
Short-form video is not a TV ad cut down to 30 seconds. It is a different craft: a hook in the first one or two seconds, one idea per video, captions for people watching with the sound off, and a look that belongs in the feed next to creators rather than between them.
It is also a volume game. One great video rarely carries a campaign, because the platforms reward fresh creative and a single ad wears out. What carries a campaign is a set of videos built from a few strong angles, each with several hooks, so you can see which opener and which argument actually sell. That is why we shoot in batches and edit in versions.
Every video we make starts in creative strategy, where the angles and hooks are written before anyone picks up a camera. Production follows the script, not the other way around.
Short-form video specs by platform (2026)
| Placement | Aspect ratio and size | Max length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok in-feed ads | 9:16, 1080 x 1920 standard (540 x 960 minimum) | 5 to 60 seconds for in-feed ads | Shorter ads are usually easier to win with. Use TikTok's native text and sounds where you can. |
| Instagram Reels | 9:16, 1080 x 1920 | Up to 3 minutes since January 2025 | Upload clean files with no other app's watermark. |
| YouTube Shorts | 9:16, 1080 x 1920 | Up to 3 minutes since October 2024 | Shorts can also run as ads through Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns. |
| Facebook and Instagram feed ads | 4:5, 1440 x 1800 recommended for Facebook Feed | Short is safest for ads | Make a 4:5 crop of every 9:16 video. Frame the subject center-safe from the start. |
| Meta Reels and Stories ads | 9:16, 1080 x 1920 or 1440 x 2560 | Short is safest for ads | Keep text and logos out of the top and bottom bands where captions and buttons sit. |
Check each platform's safe-zone overlay before export. Specs change, so we confirm against the live ad specs at the start of each production.
How a short-form video shoot runs
Hook bank
We write more hooks than we need for each angle: a spoken line, an on-screen text line and a visual opener for each. The best get scripted.
Scripts and shot lists
Each script fits on one screen: hook, problem, product moment, proof, call to action. The shot list covers every angle so one shoot day feeds many edits.
Shoot in batches
Founder talk-to-camera, creator UGC, product close-ups, texture and process shots, b-roll of the product in use. Shot vertically, with horizontal-safe framing where a 4:5 crop is needed.
Edit in versions
Each body gets several hooks and at least two lengths. Captions are burned in, sound is chosen for the platform and the call to action matches the landing page word for word.
Export per placement
9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 4:5 for feeds, each checked against safe zones and named so test results are easy to read in Ads Manager.
Short-form formats that sell products
Problem, then product
Open on the frustration your buyer knows, show the product fixing it within the first five seconds. Works for almost any physical product.
Founder to camera
The person who made it explains why, in one take with no slick edit. Strong for new brands with a real origin story.
First try or unboxing
A creator opens it and reacts. Best shot as UGC by someone who matches your buyer.
Show the result
Before and after, side by side, or a time-lapse. Category rules apply: beauty and skincare claims need care.
Three reasons list
Numbered reasons hold attention because viewers wait for number three. Easy to make in volume with new hooks.
Reply to a comment
Answer a real comment or objection on screen. It reads as organic on TikTok and Reels and handles doubts head on.
Anatomy of a short-form video ad that sells
- A hook in the first one or two seconds, with both a visual change and on-screen text
- The product on screen early, not saved for the end
- Burned-in captions so the video works with the sound off
- One idea per video, not a list of every feature
- A person the buyer recognizes as someone like them
- A call to action that matches the offer on the page the ad links to
- Native look: shot on a phone or made to feel like it, platform fonts and sounds
Case study: a new product launch
We launched a new product. In 2 weeks, these are the results.
- 115kfollowers, starting from zero
- 7,000+emails collected
- 100+purchases across an app, a book and a paid community
No audience, no list and no sales on day one. Organic content earned the follow, a landing page captured the email, and three offers closed the sale. Read the case study.
What short-form video production costs with us
We don't sell video by the clip. Production is part of a campaign, because a video with no test plan and no landing page behind it is a cost, not an asset. A campaign launch starts at $5,000 and includes strategy, concept, production, ad setup, the landing page and the first optimization round. Always-on campaigns start at $3,500 a month and include fresh creative every month. Ad spend and creator fees are separate. Details are on our pricing page.
From you we need product samples, your brand assets, any claims you can't make, and one person who can approve scripts and edits quickly. The videos then run where they fit best: TikTok, Instagram or YouTube Shorts.
