Why YouTube Shorts is not just another short-form feed
Shorts looks like Reels and TikTok, but YouTube is a search engine with a video feed attached. People type "best running shoes for flat feet" or "is this serum worth it" into YouTube and Google, and Shorts show up in those results. A Short can keep getting found for months, while a TikTok usually burns out in days.
YouTube also owns the living room. Shorts and ads now play on TV screens through the YouTube app, which means your vertical video may be seen by a whole household. And buyers on YouTube are often further along: they are comparing, watching reviews, checking if a product is worth it.
So we plan Shorts around questions your buyers search, not just trends. The same concept that wins on TikTok gets a YouTube version with a searchable title, a spoken keyword in the first seconds and a reason to click through to a longer review or your landing page.
YouTube ad options a YouTube ads agency should know in 2026
| Campaign or format | Where it runs | When we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Demand Gen | Shorts, in-stream, in-feed, Discover, Gmail and Display | Sales, leads and sign-ups. Replaced Video action campaigns, which were upgraded to Demand Gen |
| Video view campaigns | Skippable in-stream, in-feed and Shorts together | Cheap views to build a retargeting pool at launch |
| Video reach campaigns | Shorts, in-stream and bumpers | Big moments where reach and frequency matter more than clicks |
| Creator partnerships boost | Demand Gen in-feed and Shorts, plus video view and reach campaigns | Running a creator's video as an ad, co-branded with their channel |
| Organic Shorts | Shorts feed, search, channel page | Search-led content that keeps finding buyers for months |
Google's names, checked against Google Ads Help in November 2026. Creator partnerships boost was previously called partnership ads powered by BrandConnect.
Shorts creative that works on YouTube
Specs first: 9:16 vertical at 1080 x 1920, up to 3 minutes for organic Shorts. Google recommends 10 to 30 second vertical videos for action-focused ads.
Answer a searched question
"Does it actually remove limescale?" beats a mood film. Say the question out loud and on screen so YouTube understands the topic.
Show the result early
Demand Gen video on Shorts plays with sound on by default. Use the first two seconds for the payoff, then explain.
Honest comparisons
Side-by-side tests and "what I'd buy instead" formats suit YouTube's review culture far better than polished brand spots.
Creator videos with a boost
A creator's existing Short about your product can run as a co-branded ad. We brief creators through our creator program with this in mind.
Horizontal cuts too
Some in-feed and in-stream placements do not serve vertical video, and in-stream needs 10 seconds or more. We deliver 16:9 versions of winners so Demand Gen can use every placement.
What YouTube Shorts ads cost
Budgets on YouTube are set by what Google's bidding needs to learn, not by a platform minimum.
| Cost line | Typical figure | Source and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shorts ads CPM | About $3 to $8 per 1,000 impressions | Third-party 2026 benchmarks; usually cheaper than in-stream |
| Skippable in-stream CPV | About $0.01 to $0.10 per view | Higher in finance, B2B and other crowded categories |
| Demand Gen budget | At least 20 times your target CPA per day | Google Ads Help guidance for conversion bidding |
| Cold-start floor | At least $100 a day per ad group | Google's advice to avoid a slow start |
| Example | $40 target CPA x 20 = $800 a day | That is why we often start Demand Gen on a cheaper event, like a lead |
CPM and CPV ranges are third-party estimates and swing with season and category.
How we measure YouTube Shorts campaigns
Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts as soon as the Short starts playing. Views went up for everyone and stopped meaning much. The older, stricter metric still lives in YouTube Analytics as engaged views, and that is the one we report, along with average percentage viewed.
For ads we track conversions in Google Ads, but YouTube is often the first touch and gets little credit in last-click reports. So we also watch branded search volume, direct traffic and post-purchase survey answers during a campaign, and we suggest a lift test when budgets are big enough to run one.

Produce once, cut three ways
We shoot for 9:16, then cut 16:9 and square versions for Demand Gen placements. Our short-form video production team handles all of it.
Launch organic, then boost
Shorts go live on your channel. The best performers move into Demand Gen and, for creators, into partnership boosts.
