When LinkedIn ads are worth the price, and when they are not
LinkedIn is the only ad platform where you can target by job title, seniority, company size and industry with data people keep up to date themselves. That precision costs money. Clicks routinely cost several dollars, so LinkedIn pays off when one customer is worth thousands: SaaS, B2B services, professional tools, recruiting, high-ticket courses and founder-led brands selling to other businesses.
It rarely pays for a $40 consumer product. If your buyer is a consumer, put the budget into Meta or TikTok and use LinkedIn only for the founder's organic posts. We will tell you that in the free plan rather than take a LinkedIn budget that will not return.
When it fits, LinkedIn works best as a trust channel. Buyers there want to see who is behind the product. The formats that win in 2026 put a real person, usually a founder or an expert, at the center.
LinkedIn ad formats we use
Thought Leader Ads
Promote a post from your founder, an employee or any LinkedIn member who approves it. Eligible posts include text, single image, video and articles; documents, polls and multi-image posts are not. Our default opening move.
Video Ads
Sponsored video in the feed. Founder explainers, customer clips and short product demos. We cut 4:5 for the feed and 16:9 for desktop.
Document Ads
A PDF, deck or report people read in the feed, optionally gated behind a Lead Gen Form. Great for benchmark reports and playbooks.
Lead Gen Forms
Pre-filled forms from profile data. LinkedIn recommends 3 to 4 fields; every extra field costs leads.
Conversation Ads
Messaging ads with up to 5 buttons. Useful for demo booking and event invites to warm audiences, not for cold reach.
BrandLink
Video ads placed before publisher and creator video on LinkedIn. A reach play for bigger budgets once the message is proven.
How we launch a LinkedIn campaign
A typical founder-led B2B launch, from brief to first meetings.
Interview the founder
One recorded call gives us the stories, opinions and proof points for a month of posts and video. You approve every word before it goes out.
Publish organically first
Posts go out from the founder's profile. The ones that get real comments from your target titles become Thought Leader Ads.
Offer something worth a form
A benchmark report, calculator or teardown, run as a Document Ad gated by a short Lead Gen Form.
Retarget warm viewers
People who watched half a video or opened the document see a direct offer: a demo, a trial or an event invite, often through Conversation Ads.
Review pipeline weekly
We cut ads that bring leads but no meetings and put the budget behind the ones that bring buyers.

What LinkedIn ads cost in 2026
LinkedIn is the most expensive platform we run, per click and per thousand impressions.
| Line | Typical figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CPC (US) | About $5 to $12 | Senior and technical audiences cost more |
| CPM | About $30 to $90 | Video often lands around $35 to $60 |
| Minimum daily budget | $10 per campaign | LinkedIn suggests $25 a day for new advertisers |
| Minimum lifetime budget | $100 for a new campaign | Then $10 times the number of scheduled days |
| Example math | $8 CPC x 500 clicks = $4,000 | At a 10% form rate, that is about 50 leads at $80 each |
Minimums from LinkedIn. CPC and CPM ranges are third-party 2026 benchmarks and vary by audience size and seniority.
How our LinkedIn ads agency measures success
Cost per lead is a trap on LinkedIn. Lead Gen Forms make it easy to collect names from people who never reply. We track leads through to meetings booked and pipeline created, by syncing forms to your CRM or email tool and tagging every lead with the ad that produced it.
That changes what we optimize. A Document Ad that brings 30 leads at $120 each and 6 meetings beats one that brings 80 cheap leads and no meetings. We report both numbers every week, and we build the landing page and follow-up sequence so leads who leave LinkedIn have somewhere useful to go.
LinkedIn ads mistakes that burn budget
- Audiences of 5,000 people that run out of new viewers in a week.
- Brand-voice company posts promoted instead of a real person's post.
- Asking for a demo from people who have never heard of you.
- Lead Gen Forms with 8 fields and no follow-up within a day.
- Running 9:16 video only, which mostly reaches mobile users.
- Turning on Audience Network without checking where the ads appear.
- Judging LinkedIn on cost per click against Meta. Compare cost per meeting.
